Look'in for something different - try METZGER'S DOG
I'm only on page 67 or so, and find this unusual story to be very entertaining..written by Thomas Perry. It's an oldie -1983.

This is a mystery, but I don't think I'll spoil it for you by telling you that Dr. Metzger is a cat. I haven't got to the part where he meets the dog.
