Helping the local library while helping myself
Library had its quarterly book sale fundraiser this weekend, selling used books in their collection as well ones donated by the fundraising club.

For $6 total, I was able to get:

The Clone Wars movie novelization. Really lucky find as when it was announced that these book wouldn't get a paperback release, all of the copies in the area were already out of stores.

Shadows of the Empire paperback. Better than my current copy.

Return of the Jedi novelization, Illustrated Edition. The only reason why I knew that this book even existed was a Star Wars "fleet junkie" (fans of capital ships) message thread. I never thought that I'd actually be able to find one.

Star Wars: Complete Cross-sections. Pretty used, but I'm definately not complaining.

Star Trek: Best Destiny hardcover. I'd heard a lot about this book, but I've never read it.

The Dark Knight Returns. One of the best graphic novels of all time. Glad I was able to pick this up.

So, any other local libraries where you all live have something like this? If so, what have you picked up, if anything?

1. My library has a BIG sale every July,
but they have some shelves out in the lobby all year long with books available to buy. I've bought quite a few things, but I haven't allowed myself to look in a while because my shelves at home are getting too full.

2. mine too
I've picked up some real gems off those shelves.

On the other hand, I've seen books I paid $25 for years ago and now they're a dollar.

3. Cull your shelves and give back to the library!
That's what I have to do every 3-4 years. Although this year, I gave my culls to the dog rescue I volunteer for to sell in their annual yard sale.

But... the point is, we have a house full of books. Multiple shelving units in every room. Just about all of them were good reads the first time - but there are always several that I read in any given year that I just know I won't read again. Those are the ones I give to the library for their book drive. It frees up space on my shelves, and allows someone else to have the pleasure of reading them.

4. I have found some great books at the library and thrift stores
Our local Goodwill has some wonderful finds in classic and new books. I donate my books back to them or to our local library to be sold again. It's a great form of recycling and helping others at the same time.

5. I joined Friends of the Library - costs $5
and picked up at the last sale - some kiddy books for grandson, a huge encyclopedia, an almost new dictionary, 3 books on trees - identifying & pruning, and one called FOOD REMEDIES.

About $9 worth...

6. I picked up some scifi classics I missed
A Canticle for Liebowitz, 2001: A space Odyssey and T.H. White's the Once and Future King (classic, but not sci-fi), and a few pulp things to read when I'm bored.

Total cost: 3$.
