3. Nelson DeMille's 'The Gate House' sequel to 'The Gold Coast [
about wealth, high society and the Mafia on Long Island. He writes like a smug-ass Republican but he is so clever that I forgive him for his sins. Talk about an acerbic tongue!!!!

personally disappointed not one of his best, but i'll wait and say more until after you've finished

all of his heroes have a similar "voice" but what works in say an angry post-911 book like "wild fire" just seems silly to me in "the gate house" which i guess is supposed to be a novel of manners

jane austen he ain't

4. Finally took the plunge and started Neal Stephenson's "Anathem"
It's really, really good -- almost Barth-like in a 21st-Century sort of way -- but it does require a commitment before it gets going.

It's excellent but I don't have a lot of time to read right now so it'll take me awhile to finish it.

22. You Owe It To Yourself To Read The Last Book In That Series.

Ellroy's "Blood's A Rover." It just came out, I just finished reading it, and my brain is still fried, big-time. Highly recommended, but not for the faint-hearted.......

19. Non-Fiction at the moment
The Food of a Younger Land by Mark Kurlansky

It's a compilation of writings from the WPA writers projects in the 30's and 40's when food was both local and seasonal. There are submissions from every region of the country.

This was recommended by grasswire in the Cooking & Baking Group. So far I've just read the Intro and it's even fascinating.

:hi:
