11. 'Tree of Smoke' by Denis Johnson. An amazing, epic book.

This is the fourth Johnson book I've read - 'Jesus' Son,' 'Fiskadoro,' and 'Resuscitation of A Hanged Man' are the others - and the more of his stuff I read, the more I'm just amazed by the guy. He really does deserve more credit as a great contemporary novelist, although his National Book Award for 'Tree' was a well-deserved (and arguably belated) honor.

13. I just finished 'Last Words'

By George Carlin. Bought it yesterday.....and finished it last night. I have 'Careless in Red' by Elizabeth George, and 'Infidel.'

I also have 'The Bishop's Man'...I'm looking forward to that....and a new Jasper Fforde book, as soon as it comes back. I have Canada and Other Matters of Opinion, Wicked Plants: A Book of Botanical Atrocities, Why your World is About to get a Whole Lot Smaller, by Jeff Rubin.....there was a 30% off sale on hardbound books, and I am a voracious reader. It's my one vice.

When I realized that the character telling the story was the dog, not the master, I almost didn't bother to read it. Thought it would be stupid.

Dog lovers, put this one on your list, regardless of your age or sex.

I enjoyed it. There's a sequel that I'm going to get next.

23. Black Sand by William J. Caunitz

Caunitz was a retired NY City Police LT. He's been dead for several years but I found a couple of his books in a used books store. He writes a very gritty tale of the NYPD and their drinking and cheating and fighting crime and screwing around. Good Stuff
