What are you reading the week of September 26, 2010
Edited on Sun Sep-26-10 05:04 AM by hippywife
Me, Friday night I finished another J. California Cooper book, Homemade Love. Great book of short stories by a national treasure, even though I am an athiest and she gets a little preachy sometimes, but not enough to bother me.

http://aalbc.com/authors/j.htm

And started World Made by Hand by James Howard Kunstler that same night. I'm about two thirds of the way through it and find it hard to put down.

Sending more vibes out to DUGosh.

1. I'm reading The Death of Artemio Cruz
by Carlos Fuentes. You can't understand Mexico unless you read this book. I'm trying to do it in Spanish (not my first language) and find it very interesting, but tough going.

6. Just started VERMILLION DRIFT by William Kent Krueger
It's the 10th in a series featuring Sheriff Cork O'Connor in Minnesota. I especially liked his first one, Iron Lake although a few others were very good.

10. I am so sorry for you.
I've found myself in the same predicament at times. I'm on the last book in my current stack so went online to the library and reserved another stack of 7 coz I hate when that happens!

on 10 library holds. Something's bound to turn up soon. I console myself with poets. I read The Tempest last night and Rumi is always on the nightstand.

13. Many of the books I'm reading
are not hot on the request list. Many are very old. That always helps to get them delivered to my branch pretty quickly.

Hope yours come soon. :hi:

17. Just starting BREATHING WATER by Timothy Hallinan
He has two series out - one about Simeon Grist in LA and another about Poke Rafferty in Bangkok, Thailand.

Breathing Water is about Rafferty and it's the 3rd in a series of 4. My library doesn't have 1 and 2, but if this one's any good I may get them thru interlibrary loan....

She has a real track record winning awards for her previous books. Since these mysteries take place in Quebec, is there a lot of French so that a non-French-speaking American might not be able to enjoy her writing? I think I may try her first one, Still Life.

P.S. How do you phonetically pronounce "Gamache" as in Chief Inspector?

Just noticed your nick - that's a lot of shoes...

22. There's not
a lot of French, just the word or phrase here and there, easily recognizable
I pronounce the Chief Inspector as Ga-Mosh
I don't know if that is correct, but it's not the first time I've faked it in a book
I really, really like this new book (about halfway thru)
The story centers not only on the Quebec City murder, but revisits the case from her last book The Brutal Telling
If this one doesn't win a top award, the award awarders are crazy

25. Centipede....
Just finished The Cruelest Month and am about to start A Rule Against Murder by Louise Penny.

Looked through the book a few minutes ago and couldn't find any mention of Nicole, Gabri, Olivier, or Ruth. I especially wanted to see more of Nicole. Is that the end of them now? Will they be back in the next 3 books? The reveiws didn't mention anybody but Lacoste and Beauvoir..thanks.

26. A Rule Against Murder was the first
of the series that I read, had no knowledge of Louise Penny at that time
I found it on the New Book shelf at the library and read it before going back to the read the others in sequence
It takes place away from Three Pines while Insp Gamauche and his wife are celebrating their anniversary at a B&B
Nicole is not in this one, but shows up later, and it is not the end of the Three Pines characters
Not too far into the book you will get a surprise
