some time before 2000 I read a novel I'm now trying to find

the characters worked in a library. an old library that had a card file. during the telling of the tale humorous old cards from the file would be mentioned. the description of the novel on the card was humorous in one way or another.

at the time I was working on ,fiction by women writers, project. It will take me eons to get out the old notes and look for the book. so thought I would ask you all first.

any of you remember this novel?
