23. Finished this book last night

No Rest for the Dead is probably a book most mystery readers would enjoy. I started to enjoy it, but eventually became weary of the whole thing, in spite of the good writing.

With budget conflicts, family problems, a drought, and what-have-you, I need to read something with a smile or two in it. Usually police procedurals have smiles because of the camaraderie among the cops accompanied by stupidity of the bad guys.

No smiles in this book, not one.

4. Re-reading a series from my childhood..

Edgar Rice Burroughs John Carter on Mars series. Brings back memories of my junior high days back in the 50's.

7. Catch-22, again.

After reading Vanity Fair's article about Keller I felt like re-reading the novel. Also, had my boys watch "Twelve O'Clock High" with me tonight. They'd never seen it and I've had the DVD for a long time, waiting for them to grow up enough to appreciate it.

8. Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes. A novel of the Viet Nam war by a veteran. (pub 2010)

One of the best books I have ever read. I won't even try to do justice to it by praising or trying to describe it. You just have to read it.

12. "The Shaman Laughs" by James D. Doss

Fadedrose is right! This series is soothing for the soul. Daisy Perika is a hoot! She is also very wise. I just love her.:thumbsup:

I like the way Doss comments on these people, as tho he were innocent of their bad behaviors. He puts down Daisy all the time and I know he adores this character. I envy you just starting out, but I'm tellin ya, the second reading is even better...

I last read it in high school and it was as good as I remembered.

Next is a Willa Cather collection.

25. Blood Canticle by Anne Rice

I'm only 12 pages in so far.

Finished Blackwood Farm the other day, not too bad, not that great. I've read her Witching Hour line, and Blackwood Farm reminds me of that series so much, and the ending/lots of things were predictable.

Rice has finally combined her Witches/Vamp line fully in this novel, she did a bit in Merrick, but BWF really brings them together. I'm a Rice fan, and if you are a fan I recommend it. If you aren't really a fan, I'd pass, especially if you disliked her Witching Hour line....
