When will There Be Good News? by Kate Atkinson - Jackson Brodie book #3

After finishing Started Early Took My Dog and ranking it right up there with my all time favorite The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo, I plowed through the first two books in the Jackson Brodie series and started on the third today. I agree with Matt819, I think #4 is my favorite. The character Tracy reminded me of my beloved Agatha Raisen.

This isn't a Joe Pickett book - it's a stand-alone about an alcoholic ex-cop, Cody Hoyt. Takes place in Yellowstone Park, Wyoming & Montana..

I origionally bought this book for my grand children , but I have fallen in love with it! The illustrations are awesome and as usual Dawkins is brilliant

32. I listened to it on audiobook

It was read by one of my favorite narrators. That helped.

But the story was good, I thought. Very entertaining in a historical novel setting. It's a long book but it never seemed to drag.

10. The Third Option by Vince Flynn

11. I enjoyed the first several Flynn books.

He took kind of a hard-right turn in the last 2-3 I read, though, and I had a hard time enjoying the stories as much.

Have you read Marcus Wynne? Similar type of action, but he writes like someone who's "been there, done that," and it shows through in the stories. He does a better job of keeping his politics out of his books, too.

14. I got tired of Flynn after 2 of his books

Hey m, I looked up Fowler at Amazon, and they have all of him on Kindle, trouble is is that his stuff is expensive ($11.95).

He's a mile away from the kind of stuff you read, but the mysteries are very complex and the main character, Bryant, is outrageous. Keep an eye on him and if the price comes down, give him a shot.

I don't have kindle, but look it up on the books I do read, thinking of you..don't see much freebies though...

I read that libraries are starting to loan kindle ebooks now. (And the program "kindle for pc" is a free download from Amazon.) Might get you converted yet. :) haha.

by Betty Smith. She wrote A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

This one is about a young couple in 1927 and the challenges they face while he is a law student. Hope and idealism face the realities of being poor.

Pulitzer Prize winner.

I'm really digging it so far. I'm a sci-fi/fantasy geek, too.:popcorn: I'm actually getting a lot of the pop-culture references; I grew up in roughly this same time period (70s-90s).

19. I'm reading a filler book but anticipating opening Neal Stephenson's latest.

I've got Donald Preston and Lincoln Child's "Brimstone" nearly done, which I started when a friend told me he was mailing a signed copy of "REAMDE" from a signing in Denver. I'm much more excited about the one I'll be starting tomorrow than the one I'm going to be finishing today.

I loved both of Smoogatz' books and have waited a long time for the next one. The first was called High Season.

The author, Jon Loomis, used to come in but he hasn't been around for a long time. He said he was working on a third - and that was ages ago. Where did you find out about Fire Season?

Yes, I got a recommendation to read Loomis' book several years ago, and then forgot about the book (I had bought it at Strand's in NYC) up until two weeks ago, when I read High Season.

Loved that book, so I decided to Kindle Mating Season.

I checked smoogatz' activity, he posted on October 2nd in the Activist forum.

24. Just finished The Leftovers by Tom Perrotta

This is a comic, but darkly comic, view of "the rapture," or whatever it is that caused millions to disappear - regardless of religiosity, purity, age, gender, etc. Whole families, individual family members, etc. And this is the story of "the leftovers." Captures middle age angst, young love, community, loss, grief - you name it. For some reason, the last line in the book is a riot, and one you don't really see coming if you're listening to the book, especially if you're not paying attention to how much time is left in the book. It just knocks you, especially when you consider the range of coincidences that causes it to happen, and the person who has the last line. Some might see this as a "chick" book, others as a middle aged guy book, and still others as something akin to teen fiction (though a little bleak teen fiction, like "I Don't Want to Kill You). Something for everyone, I suppose.

"A Clash of Kings," book two in the Song of Ice and Fire series ("A Game of Thrones") by George R.R. Martin, and "The Fatal Gift of Beauty" by Nina Burleigh, an account of the Amanda Knox trial.

I picked up a nice hardback copy of George Eliot's "Adam Bede" at a garage sale! I'm enjoying. I've never read any of her novels before.
