I'm enjoying reading a new (to me) author: Louise Penny

"Her oeuvre features Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, head of the homicide department of the Sûreté du Québec. The novels, although set in the province of Quebec, feature many hallmarks of the British whodunit genre, including murders by unconventional means, bucolic villages, large casts of suspects, red herrings, and a dramatic disclosure of the murderer in the last few pages of the book."

My own assessment it that her writing style is sophisticated but still easy to read. The characters are well-developed and interesting, and it really is a lot like reading a good Agatha Christie novel, but in current day. She also seems quite progressive politically, just a sense I get from reading the way she describes her characters and their lives and so forth.

The current book I'm reading and enjoying so much is called "A Trick of the Light."

Here's a list of her books if you want to look them over:

Cheers,
Lex

1. Just finished it, and liked it....
I started with the first - you probably have to get them from the library or on interlibrary loan...

Centipede Shoes turned me on to Penney....

I found Penney's books harder to read than the standard American author mysteries. Now the top popular books by American authors seem too easy and I don't enjoy them as much.

Try Christopher Fowler if you like Penney. You'll love him. Same deal, go to the library and start with the first..

and then, you must try Alan Bradley's series about Flavia, a 13-year old Englishgirl who is a chemist and uses it to solve mysteries.

8. Just discovered Kindle has her first one (Still Life)
for $2.99 so I just downloaded it to read. The rest appear to be regular price, however.

Thanks! :)

4. Another English author - Kate Atkinson
writes about Jackson Brodie, ex-cop and PI in the UK. A couple of people in DU like her quite a bit, and she's now on my list..

9. Thank you for this -
I've read her others and didn't know about this new one ... thanks!

I read a lot of mysteries. Here are some others I particularly like - Batya Gur (Israeli author deceased now - but the mysteries she wrote were phenomenal), Deborah Crombie, Tana French ("Faithful Place" is the best book I've read this fall), and Peter Robinson.

:D
