Are there any active writers weirder than China Miéville?

I don't know how Miéville sustains his muse, but the man is absolutely brilliant.

1. do you know Ian McDonald?

Not in the same weird fantasy vein as Mieville, but lots of the same sorts of brilliance about the special qualities of unique settings. I especially recommend one of his most recent novels, The Dervish House, but also River of Gods, Desolation Road and Aries Express. He's sometimes compared to Gabriel Garcia Marquez, with a sort of science fiction bent (I mean, Desolation Road and Aries Express are set on Mars, but they're definitely NOT space operas).

I tried to read Desolation Road, I really did, but it confused the tar out of me. I gave up on River of Gods about 10 pages in.

Brilliant, yes. Weird - absolutely!

My favorite is The City & The City. Absolutely HAD TO THINK THE ENTIRE TIME! No passive reading in that book.

Wasn't crazy about the Kraken but it was okay.

I thought the entire time I was reading Perdido Street Station that China was a "she". . . imagine my surprise at the picture on the back flap! :rofl:

Mervyn Peake is pretty weird. I'm enjoying "Gormenghast" in all it's gothic weirdness.

His book Kafka On The Shore has Colonel Sanders and Johnny Walker as characters.

This works for me in looking for mysteries. Have found quite a few with this method.

Oh, and my library has some Mieville - but I'm into mysteries.
