1. Amos Walker: The Complete Story Collection

By Loren D. Estleman. 637 pages in hardcover, it's the complete compendium of all short stories he's written with Detroit PI Amos Walker. Walker's one of my favorites, so this was a nice holiday bonus. :)

6. Re-reading George Orwell's 1984.

It is so relevant today. The first chapter refers to "Hate Week," how the proles still are sensitive and when they show emotion they are dragged off to concentration camps, "the clock is striking 13," and every building is named for the opposite (Ministry of Love is really ministry of hate, Ministry of Peace is 'war,' (Bushisms), telescreens that watch you 24 hours a day, etc:

9. DEATH OF AN OUTSIDER by M. C. Beaton

Short, less than 200 pp.. A lot Scottish accent makes these books a bit of a challenge. It's very humorous so far and I'm only on page 7... ;)

26. I love these Hamish MacBeth books

There's about 29 of them in the series - and they are short - the ones I've read are less than 200 pp. They're a joy to read.

10. "The Lady of Lunenburg" by Laurel Pardy. A novel about pioneers that takes place in the exact time

and location of my own ancesters. It is a wonderful experience. So far I've come across one actual ancestor in the book. Both sides of my family are descended from that group of German settlers who arrived in Nova Scotia in 1752. What a hard life it was.

12. A Dance with Dragons by G. R. R. Martin and Forbidden Fruit by Paul Kurtz

I always have to have at least one fiction and one non-fiction book going at any time.

13. Sixkill, another Robert Parker post-mortem publication. Apparently he was writing....

... so fast at the time of his death that the books just keep coming. I think he actually wrote them faster than I can read them.


It's mindless distraction, but fun for a break. You can read one of his entire "novels" in a couple hours or less.



As for a recommendation, "Truck" or "Population 485" by Michael Parry.

If you like fantasy this one is a keeper. I'm almost finished; next up The Confessor, by Daniel Silva.

22. the distant hours

"The Distant Hours" by Kate Morton. I couldn't put the first 100 pages down. I was actually neglecting some other things I needed to do!

23. Just finished "The Tiger" by John Vaillant

For my natural history book club. Reads like a thriller fiction with lots of character background plus spooky tiger facts and observations.

A good look on the effects of Perestroika and the rise of China on a long-neglected environmental "oasis" of sorts in the Sino-Soviet Far East.

A gripping read with one quirky bit of trivia - the word "Viagra" comes from the Sanskrit word for "tiger."

Punch line to the read -- "For tigers to exist, we have to want them to exist."

Holiday tasks will eat into my reading list, but await Santa to bring the Jobs biography.

24. Last night, just finished "The Luminist" by David Rocklin

A novel that takes place in 1830s Sri Lanka (then Ceylon). Pretty good read.
