I feel like reading "Geek Love" again

just for the hell of it. I'm going to the James E. Straight Show midway and I want to "get in the mood". Arturo the Flipper Boy is my favorite villain in all of fiction. I'll never forget the first time I read this classic. I was hooked from the first page, but then again I've always loved carnivals and freaks. Too bad Katherine Dunne hasn't written anything of late. Anybody else love this twisted book?

1. I love this book.

I read it for the first time only last year at the insistence of a friend that leant me his paperback copy. And like you, I was hooked from the first chapter. When I finished it I didn't feel that I could return his copy in the same shape that he leant it to me, so I bought him a brand new one. He wouldn't accept either because he wanted to get a hardback version. So, I passed the brand new copy on to another friend.

I love this book.

Disabilities Studies class. You should read "P.H.*reaks: The Hidden History of People with Disabilities."

3. OMG

That is my all time favorite book! Even weirder, when I was becoming politically aware in 1989, I read that book during the reign of my right wing boyfriend, who said women could not write meaningful books of any sort. He also said he would never even try to read it because of the title. Until then,I had never really heard a "republican" talk. The more he talked, the more I learned about the right wing and what they REALLY are all about. It truly was my political epiphany. I knew then I must cancel out this man's vote FOREVER. To think GEEK LOVE started it all.

I don't think a repug could ever "get" this story. Repugs who worship the chimp are like those poor souls who lop off their limbs for Arty. You remember, the Arturans.

I just pulled my copy out of storage to start re-reading it myself. The way she uses bizarre words is so interesting. And the story is so disturbing.

I was amazed the mother didn't die, drinking all those chemicals so she'd have freaky kids.

By the way, another very strange book is "The Obscene Bird of Night". When Nine Inch Nails came out with the song, "I'm the Man in the Box" I immediately thought of that book.
