anyone read "The House of the Spirits"?

I cannot stand the fascist rants of Esteban Trueba in that book. There's one that is about one page long, and another that is half a page long. After I read it, I feel disgusted and want to break something.

What's worse, the author provides no counter-argument whatsoever to the base opinions of Esteban.

Anyone else notice this? It drives me crazy.

1. That one didn't make much of an impression on me

In fact, I read it and thought, "What's the big deal about Allende?"

Then I read "Of Love and Shadows." That's the Allende book you should read. One of the best books I've read in years.

2. I finished the book... (a very small spoiler)

It was unbelievable. Probably one of my personal favorites, and definitely the best book I've read in a very long time. "House of the Spirits" is an amazing book in many ways. I recommend it to anyone.

The best part is that one can see the absolute ridiculousness of Esteban's beliefs as the book goes on. His views are gradually exposed for what they are: wrong in every way.

I'll check out "Of Love and Shadows", pretty much because of how great "House of the Spirits" is.

3. That was the first Allende book I read

I loved it, but you have to get through the first couple of chapters
