The Scarlet Letter (Norton edition) What does this mean?
Does the Norton Edition a censored edition - my son will be reading this in high school and I don't want him reading a sanitized version.
They are also going to read the Norton edition of Huckleberry Finn.

The only other idea I could come up with is that the books have notes in them explaining the book - like having cliff notes included in an unabridged book.

1. From what I'm googling on it, Norton editions give notes, commentary, etc
Do a search on "Norton Edition".

2. I was a lit major
and we used Norton editions and collections throughout college (although that was more than a few years ago now :( )...they're usually quite good.

3. I was an English major in college.
We used Norton quite a bit; the editions weren't censored. I read "The Scarlet Letter" in HS too and it was not censored. Actually, I read TSL at least once every couple of years and I can find absolutely NOTHING in it that would be objectionable.

Anyone of a fundie mindset could even twist the meaning of the book to warn kids of the penalty for "illicit" behaviour; they want the US to become a theocracy after all, just like Salem Mass. back in the time of the novel. Of course, they would be overlooking entirely the meaning of Hawthorne's work.

4. Thanks for the info.
The school is selling the books but I thought I could get them cheaper on the internet. They're reading $45 worth of books this semester and it's a public high school!
I'm guessing, since the computer with the e-mail isn't working so I can't contact the teacher, they want the students to have their own books so they highlight and take notes in them.

I can't wait for college, I'm whining about $45 in two years I'll really have something to whine about.

5. In Adam's Fall, We sinned all...
Perhaps just purchase an uncensored version? There are many around...
