Any Spanish lit experts? Question on Cervantes-- Don Quixote
list of top 10 controversial books:
http://books.guardian.co.uk/top10s/top10/0,6109,888156,00.html

Why was "Don Quixote" on this list? Because of the sentence "Works of charity negligently performed are of no worth."?

Was "Don Quixote" considered controversial at the time it was published?

In 1605 the church wasn't laughing along

4. Thanks so much for that link
I have been searching and googling for a while and had not found that link.

Much appreciated.

Another question:
Cervantes' quote "Never stand begging for that which you have the power to earn".

I have searched all over to try and find the source for this quote. Was this quote from a particular work of his? I cannot find a source for this quote. Everything I find just mentions Cervantes as the author, but no mention if it is from a particular work of his.

5. sorry -
I'm coming up empty, too. It's not in any of his "major works", though - I'm pretty sure.

3. Thanks for asking the question.
I've copied the Guardian's list. Some I have read; some I haven't.
