Random House to publish early Capote novel
Edited on Thu Sep-29-05 12:54 PM by flamingyouth
I'm excited to read this. :woohoo:

NEW YORK - An early, unreleased Truman Capote novel will be published next month by Random House Inc. "Summer Crossing," which Capote started in 1943 and later claimed to have destroyed, is the story of socialite Grady McNeil and her adventures in New York.

"Dashing, defiant, and irrepressibly carefree, the novel's heroine will remind readers of one of Truman Capote's most lasting creations, Holly Golightly in `Breakfast at Tiffany's,'" Random House said Thursday in a statement.

The manuscript of "Summer Crossing" was found last year at the bottom of a box of Capote manuscripts and photos that was consigned by a relative of the author's former house sitter.

Capote, who died in 1984, had hired the sitter to look after his Brooklyn apartment while he was in Switzerland writing his classic true-crime book, "In Cold Blood," which came out in 1966.

1. I thought Truman Capote was a joke until I read "The Grass Harp".
A book so achingly beautiful is no kind of joke. I've read some of his other stuff, but still have not cracked "In Cold Blood". I look forward to it.

2. You should crack it
I loved "In Cold Blood." I always thought the "Capote-really-wrote-To-Kill-A-Mockingbird" people were nuts until I ready Blood. Now I can see the point.

Have not read Harp, but now I will. How does one not follow through on a recommendation of "achingly beautiful."

I recommend Blood to a lot of my high school students that want to read good literature but are more bent to historical fiction. Have not had anyone not like it.

3. I just heard about a movie coming out soon too
I believe it's about the time in his life when he was researching "In Cold Blood". Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Capote.

4. I saw a review in USA Today. The critic
gave the movie 4 stars, a rarity. And I think casting Hoffman, a great actor IMHO, is perfect! I'm looking forward to it!

6. Read "Other Voices, Other Rooms". It will give you chills.
It's making my hair stand up on end just to think about it.
