New scholarship created in honor of Octavia Butler

Friends and admirers of Octavia Butler have established a scholarship to honor the science-fiction master who died last month in Seattle.

The scholarship will allow other young writers of color to attend the Clarion Writers Workshop in science fiction, which played a pivotal role in Butler's early career.

Backers of the scholarship include Butler's publishers (Warner Books, Seven Stories Press, Beacon Press) as well as The Carl Brandon Society, Writers House and the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame.

They hope to raise $100,000 for the scholarship and have collected more than $5,000 in the initial days of the campaign. The first scholarship is to be awarded in 2007.

Very sad that she's gone, this series would have been good. :(
