recommendation: "The Kite Runner"..a most excellent read!

1. check out "Ring of Fire"

an excellent movie a bout Emile Griffith, a gay boxer who once killed an opponent (Benny Paret) in the ring. It's a documentary with great original footage.

3. story unfolds in Afghanistan before the Russian War

two little boys one privileged, the other his servant. They are closer than brothers yet not.

The story begins with their childhood, and builds the bond of their relationship very well. The title is from kite flying competitions that were major events in Kabul..the servant boy is very gifted at running down the kites which are cut down in the competitions.


I don't want to give away anything so all of this may sound stupid. But anyway the narrator, who is the privileged son and his father escape to America after the war begins, and the story revolves around life in the new land.

Then our narrator is called back to Pakistan to see his father's oldest friend who is gravely ill and is sent on a quest to rescue a young child from an orphanage in Kabul.

The story is beautifully told, sad/funny/sweet and packed full of good stuff about Afghanistan and its history and the people..especially the Taliban and extremists.

Just really good.

4. This was recommended to me today

I got it on audiobook. Clerk who recommended it said she'd pay for my next rental if I don't like it.

I'll start it this evening.

7. I'm more than half way through

The author is reading it. It's great to hear the pronunciation of the Farsi words. Otherwise I would just imagine how they sounded.

I've shed more than one tear so far.

I never expected I'd enjoy it as much as I am.

8. I loved that book!

It started out kind of slow, I thought. And before I started it, I left it laying around for a few months thinking it didn't seem all that much like something I would like. Boy was I wrong. Once the story got started, I had a hard time putting the book down. :thumbsup:
