Suggestions: The Dixiecrat Revolt?

I need three credits for my masters in History and none of the classes offered in the fall are very interesting to me. I was thinking of doing an Independent Study on the history of the modern anti-civil rights movement focusing on the democrat to republican shift of the segregationists.

I've ordered a copy of Kari Fredrickson's The Dixiecrat Revolt and the end of the solid south 1932-1968. I plan on picking up the new STROM book, but what else should I consider for this time period? Any tips on books I should read?

1. Read ANYTHING by civil rights historian Neil McMillen.

He's written some great books on the southern backlash.

2. Would Dark Journey: Black Mississippians in the Age of Jim Crow

be the book of choice? Have you read "Remaking Dixie: The Impact of World War II on the American South?" Which would be more relevant? Maybe a third option is better than either?

5. Not a specific book title but...

What comes to mind is to read some autobiographies of some of the Dixicrats. Slanted opinions for sure. But they would still give some insight into how they viewed themselves or what they hoped to portray to the public. There might be some thread of behavior in the autoographies that could be interesting. Perhaps comparing bios to autobios.

You'll need more than a couple books for an independent study. BTW, was that the Cohodas book on Strom? If not, check it out:
