Currently half-way through "Understanding Iraq" - pretty good...

The author spent much time there, speaks the language, and was a Middle East policy wonk during the Kennedy Administration.

The quotes from the field during the British mandate period are eerily familiar. :scared:

My staff rec at the bookstore will read as follows:

"Wonder why there's an insurgency in Iraq? So did the Mongols, Turks and British."

2. Well, I finished this book over the weekend - it finishes much stronger
The chapters on 'British Iraq'; 'Revolutionary Iraq' and 'American Iraq' really lay it all out for anyone to see. We are reliving the 1920s here, and it ended badly for both Britain and Iraq that time around.

Polk really spells out the Reagan/Bush propping up of Saddam as well, and inventories the WMD we ourselves sold him. Also gives the list of the American companies providing technology to Saddam that was redacted from the WMD report of December 2002.

Recommended!
