Am I the only one participating in the non-fiction Book Club?

Arghh!!! Forgive my frustration, but if no one is going to participate I'll save myself the time of continuing this endeavor.

That said, I'm on chapter 11 of Unequal Protection & have learned some things that are simply mind boggling, especially in regards to international treaties & their impact on national/local laws.

1. i've noticed that i fall behind...

when i DO read a book i gobble it down pretty quick and want to post about it, have things to say.

but i ended up reading one of the "book club" books the last few days of the assigned month, when everyone was pretty much done posting. another didn't interest me too much. another one i really wanted to read, i STILL want to read, but i haven't got my hands on it yet. other reading, activities, work, life, death... things happen and take a higher priority for me.

so i concluded that i have too many other pots on the stove to be a reliable "book club" member. i will jump in on discussions if i can, but i don't want to be part of choosing another book then not have the money and time to get my hands on the book.

sorry. :( that's just me at this point. wonder if anyone else is going through the same thing, or if folks want to keep it up?

It seems the book club gets less & less participation every month. I realize people have busy lives & summer even more so. I was just frustrated that people responded to the poll that they wanted to continue the book club but no one is participating. I guess I will continue to discuss this months book with myself. :)

3. Another non-reliable here

It isn't that I don't want to read or join in the discussion. It is that it is summer and I can dig in my garden and wade in the creek and take the kids to the park...

All the other book clubs that I'm involved in have become accustomed to my warm weather absence. I apologize for not typing a short note here & letting others know that I'd be MIA, dancing with the daisies until first frost.

4. I totally understand!

Perhaps we should select 2-3 titles for the summer, with all threads going at the same time. People might participate more during the summer knowing they can go at it more leisurely. If we had multiple titles over the course of 3 months, people could participate in as many or few threads as they wanted.

Would something like this fit into your summer life better?

5. one problem I have with it is that lots of people seem to show up

to nominate and second - but then no one seems to read or be willing to discuss the choices. Of the last four books chosen - I muddled through one - and was the only one - it was tough reading, and I didn't vote for it! I was one of about three people in the discussion. I finished it because I felt like I made a commitment to discussion by nominating and voting. Apparently, I take my responsibilities too seriously! The other was great - the last two - didn't peak my interest and wasn't willing to shell out $25 to be the only one reading again. If a book receives 12 votes - shouldn't at least 12 people be discussing it? So I haven't nominated or voted because then I feel like I am required to read and discuss the book.

Sorry. I don't know if this sounds bitchy - I don't want it to, I am trying to explain to you why I haven't been participating.

6. Hey, I'm glad to hear from you.

Imperial Hubris was a title I struggled through. I only got about 1/3 of the way through that one & felt like I should have made a better effort, so I know how you feel. I have a list of titles I would love to read (Unequal Protection is one of those) but have put off to read book club titles. If I didn't need my pesky job this wouldn't be an issue.

I enjoy the book reports others submit & the discussion they generate. If the book club fizzels out there is still plenty of dialogue on other books.

7. I'd love to get back into reading again

My move and finding a job phase were horrendous, and are now over - I feel like I could devote some time to reading again.

I'll try to check in more often. What did people vote for re: July? I love Kunstler, I'd definitely read that book. Even though he has rather pessimistic tone, he's right about many things, and he's pretty durn smart about civic design.

8. I plan on participating next month

My local library didn't have the Hartman book and I just got from vacation, but I will participate in next months book. I am about half through with The Long Emergency and am eager to discuss it with others.
