Anyone read "The Hungry Ocean: A Swordboat Captain's Journey"?
Edited on Sun Jun-19-05 07:44 PM by Say_What
This is an excellent read. Haven't read author Linda Greenlaw's other books, but this one is great and she's become quite a celeb in her Isle au Haut area of Maine.

Late in 1998, after reading The Perfect Storm, I was on State Pier in Gloucester and saw the swordboat that Greenlaw commanded--the Hannah Boden, sister ship to the Andrea Gail of Perfect Storm fame.

1. yes, I read that one before I read the perfect storm...
I did read Linda's second novel ... I liked The Hungry Ocean much better. She's had a very interesting life, to say the least, and I found her story captivating.

2. I read it, and loved it!
I also read "The Lobster Chronicles", in which she describes (her mother describing) her first book as the "mother of all personal ads". I agree.. man if I were single, I'd move to Isle Au'Haut and be her love monkey :)

I thoroughly enjoyed both books, but she has some harsh words for environmentalists and fishing regulations, that I don't agree with.

3. Read it and loved its non-romantic portrait...
...of commercial fishing. Greenlaw writes true -- and what a fine, run-with-the-wolves woman she must be! Indeed her book took me right back to my time as a crewman on a commercial fishing boat in Puget Sound -- and both made me wish I was there again and thankful I was not.

5. I've met Linda a number of times.
She's a great lady. Intelligent, funny & doesn't fit into anyone's mold other than her own. She & her mom have just released a cookbook.
Lot's of good Maine recipes.

6. Lucky you... :-) I would imagine she'd be the "when they made her they
threw the mold away" type. :bounce:
