BOOK CLUB: Nominations for December book
I know we just decided November's book, but we are trying to get on track so that by the first of one month we will know what the following month's title will be.

We'll take noms through next Monday (10/24), then poll through the following Monday (10/31).

BTW, please include your own summary of the book or a link to a bookseller that has a summary. Thanks!

NOMINATION OF BOOKS
Each person has one nomination, and can second as many books as they like. The "seconding" of the books is important because there are only 10 spots on the poll, so the "seconds" will often determine which books actually get on the poll.

1. Iraq Confidential: The Untold Story of the Intelligence Conspiracy
"Iraq Confidential: The Untold Story of the Intelligence conspiracy to Undermine the UN and Overthrow Saddam Hussein" by Scott Ritter
Scott Ritter gave a great interview on Democracy Now Friday Oct 21.
http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=05/10/21/144258

In the interview, Ritter scolds Clinton for his role in keeping sanctions against Iraq going after Iraq had destroyed it's WMD's It makes me wonder if Monica's blue dress kept us from invading Iraq during his administration. Also reminds me that Clinton was really a DLC DINO and Hillary would follow in his footsteps if elected.

Here's the publisher's review from Barnes and Noble:

2. Scott Ritter
I second that nomination. I plan on getting the book in the next week or so. I watched Ritter's Democracy Now! interview, and Ritter with Seymour Hersh on CSPAN over the weekend - Ritter's breadth of knowledge about Iraq is impressive. The fact that Hersh was helping to plug "Iraq Confidential" (he wrote the foreward and mentioned in the forum aired on CSPAN that he had investigated many of the facts Ritter presented in the book) is recommendation enough for me to read it.

Too bad Ritter is so despised by the current administration in Washington - he'd make a hell of an ambassador to Iraq.

4. "Will They Ever Trust Us Again" by Michael Moore
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0009WUV3U/qid=1130202756/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-5792740-7358366?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

From Publishers Weekly
Over the last year, Moore invited soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as their friends and family members, to send him letters. He received "thousands" of responses, mostly via his Web site, and this book presents a sampling of those transmissions. Some are short notes thanking Moore for Fahrenheit 9/11 and ranting against Republicans, but the vast majority are personal stories written with passion and an obvious mixture of emotions—anger at the Bush administration ("I signed a contract with the government to serve in our military, and proudly, but I never thought that our military would be used in such a self-serving, crooked, and disgraceful way"), remorse ("It didn’t hit me until I saw Fahrenheit 9/11 that I was driving the ship that was sending planes to kill people"), fear ("I am wondering if this is the last Christmas I will spend with my son") and sorrow ("Chris, the dead young man, was a former student of mine. This incredibly stupid war now has a face and a name, and I find I can’t quit crying"). A recurring story is that of the naïve teenager who signed up "looking for some extra pocket money and a way to college" and who is now jaded, angry and searching for a way out. In his introduction, Moore writes, "What makes these comments unique and so intense is the fact that they are not the words of the Left or the rhetoric of the antiwar movement—they are the war movement." It’s clear, however, that many of the contributors are Left-leaning or firmly in the Democrats’ camp. Not a word of dissension (and it’s safe to assume the Moore has received letters from those who don’t agree with him) is included here. Nevertheless, this collection packs the emotional punch of a SCUD missile and will open readers’ eyes to the fact that it’s not just the country that’s divided; the soldiers fighting overseas are, too.

I checked this out from the library & am more than half way through. It is very touching & I'm thinking of buying a copy for my repub mom -- it's more truth than she is accustomed to & it is from the mouths of those who know.

5. I second that nomination. Will They Ever Trust Us Again?

That's because I bought the book yesterday. Also, it is short, and I am very busy at the moment.

I'll check back.

Oops. I was too late for any of this. I'll look around to find out what the December book is.
