Publisher Rodale to Reissue EARTH IN THE BALANCE, Former Vice President Al Gore's 1992 Book on the Environment
Monday August 21, 10:56 am ET

-- Release Follows the Success of Gore's Book About Global Warming, AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, Now a New York Times No. 1 Bestseller with a Half Million Copies in Print --

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 21, 2006--

Rodale Books, publisher of former Vice President Al Gore's No. 1 New York Times bestseller about global warming entitled AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, will reissue his first bestselling book, EARTH IN THE BALANCE: Ecology and the Human Spirit in Fall 2006 (Rodale Books, Paperback, $15.95; On Sale October 31).

AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, published in May, is No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list with more than 500,000 copies in print. Mr. Gore continues to tour the country to promote both the book and documentary film about the destructive effects of climate change, and what can be done about it.

While AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH focuses on the immediacy of the global warming emergency, EARTH IN THE BALANCE takes a broader approach, focusing on the deep roots of threats to our climate, water, soil and diversity of plant and animal life. The intent is for EARTH IN THE BALANCE to add to the overall environmental discussion brought about by Mr. Gore's initiatives.

"The earth sustains us all," said Mr. Gore. "It is imperative that we meet the global environmental challenges we face in order to create a sustainable path for present and future generations. It is my hope that the reissue of EARTH IN THE BALANCE will help in solving the climate crisis."

Rodale Executive Editor Leigh Haber said, "Mr. Gore's EARTH IN THE BALANCE is a classic on the scale of Rachel Carson's groundbreaking book SILENT SPRING. Mr. Gore's early views about the environment remain relevant, and we are thrilled to bring EARTH IN THE BALANCE to new audiences. Our aim is for both books to increase discussions about climate change, and what actions the public can take to address these important environmental issues."

The forthcoming paperback version of EARTH IN THE BALANCE will feature a new introduction by Mr. Gore that documents important political and environmental developments which have occurred since the book's original publication in 1992. Mr. Gore writes about what he had planned to accomplish as president of the United States, how ExxonMobil helped remove the chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and how he thinks the current administration has steered the country in the wrong direction in dealing with the environment and the climate crisis in particular.

About the Author:

The Honorable Al Gore, former Vice President of the United States, remains a staunch advocate of environmental awareness and proactive engagement to meet the challenges of global warming and environmental pollution. Mr. Gore promotes the message that we have the tools and technologies to solve global environmental issues and create sustainable solutions, but we must take action now.

2. Very doubtful.
As an avid Goodwill hunter (I run an online bookstore), this is one book that I never see.
However, I can't tell you the thousands of copies of O'Lielly and Rush and Coulter that I run across--that remain untouched for months.
I did buy a First Edition of Earth in the Balance on Ebay for $10.
Not bad for a used book.
If you were really interested in the books people buy--just do a quick ebay search.
For books from George Bush, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter.
You might be surprised that more Democratic authors sell for higher prices than their Republican counterparts.
Now what was that you were saying about Goodwill?
LOL.

3. The idea is to get the message out...
And more people who can afford this book will help in that end. I don't really see why that should be a sticking point at all. And people did buy this book in it's first release as it was on the NY Times bestseller list just as An Inconvenient Truth is number one on it now. I also don't see this as a "Democratic" book by a "Democratic" author. I see it as a book about a global crisis that needs the attention of all people regardless of politics because this effects all of us. Perhaps the issue it discusses would have more meaning to some people if they saw it in that context and simply not in competition with the "opposition."

4. Over the years, I've seen a truckload at Goodwill, Salvation Army,
Dollar Tree, Dollar Bill's and at numerous book fairs, yard sales, and flea markets that I attend. Of course, I've seen countless O'Reilly, Limbaugh, and Coulter books, also. I saw O'Reilly's novel in hardback about a week ago, and probably should have bought it for the novelty value. I haven't seen Libby's novel, or Lynne Cheney's western. I still get a chuckle when I see "The Way Things Oughta Be", because it has appropriately been dumped in the discard pile. I usually get a copy of each title for "research" purposes in order to know the enemy. But it has to be cheap. On the other hand, the most depressing thing is to find various titles for $1.00 or so, and realize the low fair market value that you would receive if your book collection was placed on the block. I'm talking about fairly common books.
