Last week I suddenly found myself without a book to read on the bus so I got an old copy of this book from the 50 cent bin of the library I'd been hanging on to. I skip around the stories but they are all so amazing and actually, quite shocking. Guys were used to test radiation and more. In Japan, after the bomb, one guy was approached by a ballon Japenese man (effects of the bomb) who showed him a place were a heavy equipment machine was scooping up bodies and parts of bodies and dumping them in a tall mound. In another, the Russian POWS were treated the most badly with Russia just ignoring her citizens. Other stories, the Port Chicago explosion, children growing up in war towns such as Long Beach, and plenty more to turn your face ashen.
All in all, the war was not favorable, it was not "From Here to Eternity", or some John Wanye fiasco. It was bad all around too with just nearly everyone saying now that we have the bomb there is no hope ever for us. (My copy is so old the cover is not the same)
