I checked out this book thinking it was about a man's journey to Oregon, and in a way it is, but it is so much more. It is the life story of a guy who grew up in Manhattan in the 20s and 30s, through the Depression, headed up the Liberal College group at Harvard (working to elect FDR), worked in Hollywood as a screenwriter, did radio journalism for WOR in NYC, volunteered after Pearl Harbor and became a combat correspondent in WW2 on Iwo Jima, marched with MLK...later became a renowned author and historian of Native American history... the list goes on and on. Absolutely riveting account of an extraordinary life. The book is well written and truly enjoyable. Let me know if any of you read it! Unfortunately, he passed away in 2005, but his legacy is truly inspiring. I wish I had read this earlier and had been able to write him to tell him how much I appreciated it.
