The Deserter's Tale
I picked it up at the bookstore last night.

I'm not halfway through yet, but as I said to my husband, "To paraphrase Kill Bill, that country deserves its revenge."

Of course by revenge I mean war crimes trials and stuff, not more violence and killing.

If you don't know what it is - it's a book by a guy who deserted the army and went to Canada. And it's heartbreaking and infuriating but also hopeful, because he really believed all the BS at first (including the recruiter's assurances that he wouldn't be sent overseas and wouldn't see combat) but then he saw through it.

As I read about his training, I thought about my high school crush who joined the army. Did he go through the same dehumanizing process? Would I even know him anymore?

Anyway, like I said, I'm not halfway through it yet but I highly highly recommend it. It's disturbing as hell, but the truth often is.
