Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

I saw the movie a few years ago and last week I picked up a copy of the book. I have now seen the movie and read the book. Of the two, the book is much, much better.


"Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil"

This book is more like an engrossing novel. The only word I can think to describe it is "charming". It is about a local murder and the book contains one captivating and outrageous story after another--all true. John Berendt offers a gallery of true-life, honest to goodness rascals, eccentrics and characters who reside in some of Savannah's most elegant houses.

For pure entertainment this book is second to none.

Ms. Chablis has 'retired', but Savannah is a gorgeous city and should be a not-miss on any tour of the South. Had the best week of my life during a 3 day visit there. :evilgrin:

taught my daughter how to play pool when she (my daughter) was about 5 or 6 years old.

When my daughter read Midnight in the Garden years later - she was like, "Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - I KNEW there was something different about her! I just didn't know what it was!" lol

4. I read the book before I took a trip to Savannah

in 1999.....loved the book much more than the movie but the movie with its interior shots of the homes was fun to see. I don't think I would have enjoyed Savannah nearly as much as I did without having read the book. You're right the characters are tru "characters" and I don't think you'd find them anywhere else but in Savannah.

I read it so long ago, and I read so much, that I have forgotten it.

Sometimes, I think I read too much -- if I can't remember books. On the other hand, there are books that are memorable.

I read it some time ago too and recommend it not only for its entertainment value, but for the author's insight into the psyche of native Savannahans.

11. A fun book and a

very interesting city. Only made one trip up there when we lived in FL. I have a cousin who lives there and we rode up to say hey and check out some of the places in "The Book" as they call it. The real Sonny Syler (UGA's dad) played the judge in the movie.

and I love Savannah . it is a beautiful city.

Midnight is a wonderful , quirky book

Unfortunately , I could not muddle through the one about Venice by John Berendt

16. I read it years ago... I didn't love this book

the first half seemed to be written by the Savannah Chamber of Commerce pimping the town. The second half was good but I almost quit reading before it.

17. As a local

we are issued this book and we have to know every aspect of the story in the event that a tourist should ask.

I was also in the movie (very small part, less than 1 sec, but my car was in two scenes).

Clint was very cool, but the movie was a poor representation of the book.
