Owning a rather extensive Civil War library, I tend to approach Civil War books with a certain skepticism; it's very difficult at this point for a book to avoid repeating historical information, and even emotional effects, that are already covered extensively in my collection.

But this latest by Charles Flood is a gem. The author has an exceptionally rare narrative gift. If you haven't read of these events before, you'll be in excellent hands discovering them here. And even if you have several times over, you'll find them delivered in a fresh and powerful way.

This book starts out as something like a dual biography, of Ulysses Grant and William Sherman. After fate brings these two men together, the narrative shifts to being about their relationship, about how each detected and reinforced the best qualities in the other, and how indispensable these two men together were to preventing the dissolution of the Union.

I believe this is basically what Sherman said of Grant at one point in their careers. I've always been fascinated with then and the War in the West, which, imho, is a major factor in the Union winning the War (and has nothing to do with having numerous relatives who fought in the Army of the Tennessee :) ) I'll give this book a read. Thanks for the recommendation.

4. Question about another "Civil War" book....

First of all, thank you for recommending "Grant and Sherman"...on my way home tonight I was planning on stopping at the library, and now I'm curious to see if they have a copy.

Anyway, when I saw from your post that you have an extensive Civil War library, I was wondering if you knew anything (or heard anything) about "Land of Lincoln: Adventures in Abe's America" by Andrew Ferguson. Obviously this is not really a book about the Civil War (more about how Lincoln is seen in today's society), but I thought that perhaps you might have some insights.

The reason I ask is because I saw a copy in our bookstore (I work at a university) and I was going to buy it, but I didn't have my wallet with me at the time. From what I read on the cover, I imagine it might be somewhat similar to "Confederates in the Attic". Overall, the reviews on Amazon seem positive, but since I haven't purchased it (yet) I thought I would see if you might have heard about it.

Speaking of dual biographies about Civil War generals, have you read Gene Smith's "Grant and Lee"? I read it years ago.

I find other people's reviews who might say what I would say (or would want to say). Now I have two other books to check out. Thanks. Before 9-11 I had read another book about G&S but can't remember the title. It was pretty good too. These two were so colorful it would be hard to write a boring book about them.
