I finally bought a copy of 'Path Between the Seas' last night...

...I've been wanting to read this book for years. :bounce:

It was one of those rare times when I did NOT get amnesia as soon as I walked into the store ('What was that book I wanted again?'). It's only 30 years old - I'm sure others have read it by now...what are your thoughts?

1. It's a great story - an example of US meddling in the affairs of

a sovereign nation that actually produced a good result.

In this case we didn't like the country we were dealing with so we created a new country.

The engineering of course was remarkable as were the medical advances that resulted from the construction of the canal.

I had that book somewhere around here. If I can find it you've inspired me to read it again.

2. I've been a long-time Panama Canal geek

...Yet somehow never took the time to plunge into it (figuratively speaking). The confluence of geo-politics, engineering, medicine and vision have always fascinated me. And McCullough is just the kind of writer to pull it all together ('1776' is another recent favorite).
