I started Toobin's book about the Supreme Court last night
The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court

I only read the first chapter since I started it kind of late last night. And I often can't make it through some non fiction books, although Scahill's "Blackwater" was fantastic and I'm still reading Plamme's book with much interest. But Toobin's book came in for me at the library and I figured to give it a look since others are on the waiting list for it. It's great. He goes into the personalities of the justices with such interesting detail. It's even sort of gossipy.

I finished the first couple of chapters and just had to get to sleep but I woke up in the middle of the night and thought how great it was to have such a good book to look forward to today after chores and my DU visit.

I think the non-fiction bug finally bit!

1. Toobin is one of my favorite non-fiction writers
He has the gift of condensing arcane complexity to an understandable level without dumbing it down

I'd like to read that book

3. I'm tempted to buy the book and bring this copy back to the library
He packs so much info into the pages that I might like having a copy so I can read it at my leisure. The first page even fascinated me where he talks about the architecture and why the building looks the way it does. I was hooked right off the bat.

5. It's very good
At one point in "The Nine", Toobin talks about "Bush v Gore" and the aftermath. Apparently, Justice Souter was so demoralized by the ruling that he thought about retiring from the Court. I'd not heard about that until reading it.

It's a very good book, Richardo. And that wasn't "terrya REVIEWS". :-)

7. I have his book about Bush v Gore but have never read it...
:eyes:

I bought it on the bargain rack at B&N but the whole topic is just too damn depressing for me.

As for "The Nine", I do appreciate the non-review, terrya ;-)

2. It is a good book, and helps to know the personalities of each SC justice.
It was painful to read about Sandra Day O'Connor—every time he turned to her I felt my shoulders tense—but still good to get more insight than I had had. Still, I had to take a break from the book when he got to the Bush v. Gore decision, until my stomach calmed down and I could pick the book back up and take reliving it all again. You'll like getting to know some of the other justices a little better. The SC will become SO important in the near future, you'll be glad to have read this book.

4. Yes, painful to read about O'C
Earlier this year I got to thinking about her again and was tempted to send her a letter of disgust at what she helped wrought. No matter what she's going through personally I have no respect for her. She became the ultimate neocon tool. If I thought W would be trouble, and who the hell am I, surely she should have had serious doubts being such an insider.

6. Thanks for giving your take on this book.
Sounds like I need to get on the library list for it, too.

:)
