Hi - Looking for a book title or the author's name
This guy was on Bill Maher a while back. He was previously either in Clinton's or Bush's administration, or maybe they just utilized his services.

His talent is to re-name words and phrases that the public might find objectionable to innocuous, non-threatening speak.

For example - and I don't necessarily think these examples are his --

Kidnapping is now Rendition

Torture is now Aggressive Interrogation

Lay off is now Downsizing

Foreign is now Off-shore

Innocent peoples' deaths are now Collateral

Thanks for any info!

3. Nope, that's not him, but this sure does look like a good book! The guy I'm
thinking of doesn't have the credentials of George Lakoff, and I think he was more right-leaning.

Thanks for alerting me to this book, though!

6. Thanks, but that's not him/it either. Apparently you guys favor books
written by "good guys". :7 The guy on Maher wouldn't endear himself to any of us here.

9. It was Frank Luntz - but boy THIS book sounds good too - there are a couple
mentioned here which I'd like to look into.

Check out what Wiki has on Luntz - it's amazing how many of his phrases we've ALL been using:

10. I know, and the GOP has been doing this for a LONG time
Edited on Sun Nov-04-07 08:57 PM by EVDebs
With the Reagan deception by Kudlow, taking David Stockman to the woodshed for his Atlantic article outing the fiscal insanity of his boss, the GOP intimidators then trotted out Newt Gingrich's ,

"Language: A Key Mechanism of Control"
http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=1276

"Distributed to GOP candidates across the country, the memo's list of words for Democrats and words for Republicans was endorsed by Gingrich in a cover letter: "The words in that paper are tested language from a recent series of focus groups where we actually tested ideas and language." Next time you hear Gingrich complain about media focusing on the negative, refer back to these lists."

The language of CONTROL. They want power, not debate, and don't want anyone asking any questions.
