Has anyone else read Chasing the Flame by Samantha Power
Edited on Fri Apr-18-08 11:28 PM by FLDem5

I finished it during Jury Duty and it made me really look at foreign policy in a new way.

Has anyone else read it?

its about Sergio Vieira De Mello. He was part of the UN for 30 years.

Sergio always believed in drawing everyone into the process - even unapologetic killers like the Khmer Rouge. He learned some tough rules and lessons about terrorists and peace accords along the way. It was a fascinating journey.

It spans several nations and crisis and UN leaders. It frustrates you with red tape, and stubborn leaders, and the evolution of the UN's place in the world and in the conflict resolution process.

The book ends in Iraq, when terrorists blow up the UN building in Baghdad.

What a journey it is. And what it teaches you about the peace process. It really affected me, and I was wondering if it did that to anyone else.

4. OK . . . I'll look for it in my library . . .
in my opinion, the right wing has been trying to destroy the United Nations and any effective human rights efforts since it began ---

Peace is harder than war!!

5. Seen it, been wanting to read it -- thanks for your comments.
By all accounts, De Mello was a remarkable individual, and the kind that we need more of. The virtual antithesis of the Bu**sh** cabal.
