"The Downhill Lie: A Hackers Return To A Ruinous Sport", is the latest release by Carl Hiaasen.
If you enjoy Hiaasen, you'll get some good laughs from this one, even if you aren't a golf fan, maybe even especially if you aren't. Hiaasen took up the game again after a 32 year absence, and kept a meticulous diary of his misadventures on the links. He gets his customary jabs at the various morons and shysters on and off the greens, and makes a convincing case that many of the courses in his home state of Florida have done much to stave off environmental degradation (his pet cause) just by preventing the land from being overrun with condos and strip malls. Fewer things get him in finer form than FLA politics and real estate jobbers.
This book is well-timed for me. I too, have recently re-discovered the irrational allure of the game, albeit during a much shorter hiatus than Hiaasen.
