Author of Angela's Ashes near death.
NEW YORK – Frank McCourt is gravely ill with meningitis and is unlikely to survive, the author's brother said Thursday.

Malachy McCourt said that his 78-year-old brother, best known for the million-selling "Angela's Ashes," is in a New York hospice, "his faculties shutting down."

"He is not expected to live," said McCourt, himself an author and performer.

Frank McCourt was recently treated for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, but his brother says he had been doing well until about two weeks ago, when he contracted meningitis.

Damn...
I met Malachy in SF, very briefly.
Frank's book and the resultant movie was so powerful.
Sad....

3. I liked "Angela's Ashes" a lot.
He's had quite a roller coaster of a life. When he goes, I hope it happens peacefully.

4. Malachy has this incredible "irish" complexion and piercing blue eyes
I could not take my eyes off him, but the situation of our meeting was not condusive to any questions about his brother or any of their writing.
I just remember how much like my G'ma's side of the family ( we are mostly Irish descent) he looked.
And that lilting voice.
