Evening in the Palace of Reason by James R.Gaines
In 1747 J.S.Bach, ageing and irrascible musical genius and a model of Christian piety and reformation zeal was summoned to the court of Frederick the the Great, atheist, homosexual warrior king of Prussia, to serve as the butt of a practical joke. Old Bach turned the joke around and threw it in the kings face, and thereby hangs a tale as Scheherezade used to say. If you read one book of history this year, make it this one.
