Berlin Diary: The Journal of a Foreign Correspondent, 1934-1941

by William L. Shirer

I just finished it. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The book is easy to read and paints a vivid picture of day-to-day Nazi Germany as Shirer experienced it.

Shirer said more than once that if the Brits would bomb Berlin at night more than they did, the lack of sleep citizens experienced would help to undermine German morale.

As the diary goes on, things become increasingly dark. Shirer’s censors loom larger and larger in the story.

If you are interested in Nazi Germany, or in current events in the US, read this book.

1. I would also recommend "Last Train From Berlin" by Howard K Smith
Another fascinating glimpse inside Nazi Germany. He,too, was a foreign correspondent inside Germany, and got out on December 7, 1941, just hours before the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor.

2. The link between "current events in the US" and what happened in '30s Germany is a tenuous one. nt

3. Some issues, such as how different warring countries report the same incidents,
could apply to any country, any century.
