Music for stage magician
Hey - I didn't even know we HAD an Entertainment forum!!

I posted something similar in the lounge, but didn't get a lot of response. I know there are some magicians on DU - but I guess they missed the particular post.

At any rate - my son is getting ready to do a stage magic show in January. It'll be his first BIG performance! He's looking for music for the act. Preferably rock and edgy sort of thing. (But suitable for kids - so clean lyrics are a must.)

Also, does anyone know how to go about getting "permission" to use a song in an act?

3. "Flotation Device" by Lenny Dee
Hardcore techno instrumental off the CD Strictly for the Hardcore. A little hard to find, but family-friendly and just full of energy. Good luck.

13. Stock Music
I guess launchcast on yahoo is ok. But the music is limited and they put in a 3 minute add every other song.

But that is all I know of.

Remember if the music is less then 25 years old and you down load it with out paying for it you could go to jail or be fined or both.

4. Wow! I can't believe you even asked!
So many people just rip it off.

There is an article in the Hartford Advocate this week about ASCAP cracking down, and actually lurking in clubs and charging them usage fees for the live music bands perform.

If you want to be totally safe, check out this site. They have a very liberal usage policy, and you can download royalty-free music for just about anything, at varying costs as cheap as three bucks. I've used them to buy soundtracks for some of my animations and commercial jobs. Oh, and good luck to your son! Cool! Maybe he can make W disappear for his finale!

10. There's lots of stuff on that site.
Thanks for the referral to it.

I wish he could make W disappear. Or maybe he could saw him in half? ..... my son says, the sawing in half part is easy, it's putting 'em back together that's hard!

5. For permission, contact licensing departments at
bmi.com or ascap.com as the case may be, depending which one represents the artist and/or the material. They collect and distribute the royalties as dictated by copyright law.

6. If he is being paid, he needs permission
And that can be a very long process. I used some David Bowie music (Young American) in a presentation for the company I was working for and we didn't have to pay a thing because we were not being paid to see the presentation. The president of marketing liked it so well she wanted to use it in a TV ad, after jumping through dozens of hoops, we were told the owner of the rights to the song didn't want us to use it because we were going to change the words.

There are tons of CD's available with music that is "public domain" and can be used without charge by anyone. I'd strongly suggest going this route to be absolutely sure! I bet you can google "public domain music" and find what you are after.

11. He's just doing it as a volunteer
for this particular program. Although, the "event" charges a nominal fee to get in, it's a non-profit, and there'll be a lot of different programs going on.

However, if he's going to put an act together with the music (timing, etc.) we'd like it to be something he can use at a later date - for either competition or maybe for $$! (Someone has to support me in my old age!)

So my question is, if he just contacts the band (or record company) and says he's a 13 yo boy doing magic - not for pay at this point, but maybe at a later date, they won't just say - OK, go for it?

hmmmm........ well, we used to live next door to a guy in a "real" band. Maybe I can call him and see if they have anything suitable. He'd probably be okay with my son using his music.

Buy the CD today for just $19.95 and acquire the rights to use in all your performances and videos, or to have cutting edge training music that never stops making your heart pump. Wait until you hear these songs on your home or car stereo, they are awesome! BIG bass, heart throbbing music.
