that Baltar lived in on BSG?
The Cylon attack in BSG represented a kind of "sneak attack" like 9/11; Caprica is set in a kind of post-9/11 environment, even though it is set before the events of BSG. The violence is fueled by religious fanatics who are difficult to identify, and their tactics echo those of modern terrorism. It's interesting too that the same tactics were used in BSG by the humans on New Caprica, but were instead used by the "good guys".
Because the network wanted some episodes that were not part of thd larger story arc, BSG had some not-so-good episodes. However, the network eventually reversed course and trusted Ron Moore with more discretion in how the show and story would play out. I think the network learned their lesson and will leave him alone on Caprica, so it has a lot of potential.
My only worry is that it will ruin BSG for me by trying to fill in too many blanks. Case in point is the Lonesome Dove prequels. I loved Lonesome Dove, especially the mini-series. It's a great epic story filled with great characters and great performances. Part of the awesomeness was the fact that we meet these two old guys who have been friends for thirty years, and you think to yourself, "Man, I bet they had some great adventures when they were younger." You could kind of imagine the adventures yourself. Then the prequels came along and suddenly all the adventures that I had imagined conflicted with the story of the prequels. The mystique of Gus and Call's relationship was ruined for me. That being said, I think Caprica is set so far in the past that there is less chance for that kind of letdown.
In fact I have noticed several similarities between Lonesome Dove and BSG, the main one being that they both rock!
