Well, another year of Smallville is over and my dvd SmallvilleOthon is finally at an end.
I'm glad Smallville got another year, I believe they start airing season 9 in the next month or so...but, I'm going to talk about season 8 for a bit.
Season 8, the introduction of Doomsday, Dan Turpin, Parasite, Livewire(bleh, they botched this one bad), Tess Mercer, Maxima, Zatanna, Zod's wife, Kandor, and the Legion of Superheroes(Lightning Lad, Irma, and Roxx) was quite a BIG list of heroes/villains to bring in. When I first heard that they were bringing in Doomsday my brain cried "NOOOOOOOO!" On the other hand, after watching the season, it wasn't that bad at all.
The way in which they brought in Doomsday was very fitting for the show, and it made as much sense as the way he was introduced/explained in the comic books. They carried over some traits from the comics though, like his bodies style of evolution aka "whatever kills/stops him once, will never be able to do so again" and they showed that rather well throughout the season. And I'm surprised the show had the guts to bring in Doomsday, while the Big Screen types have failed to add an ounce of imagination to the Superman mythos, a little TV show upstages them...
I came into the season thinking Doomsday was going to suck big time, and I was surprised that his creation/angle to the Smallville storyline worked out just fine. I just wish they would have shown more of him throughout the season, and the season finale was good, but man the film editing, and the "follow through" was pretty rough.
The inclusion of the other characters I mentioned in paragraph three were all decent introductions, the Legion of Superheroes episode was very good, and still stands out to me as the best episode of the season.
Tess Mercer was also a good inclusion, I thought a season with Rosenbaum would be akin to a Winter with no snow...but Mercer did good carrying the villain role.
The things that confuse me are...Kandor and the blue orb that Mercer has in the last 5 episodes are so, I have no idea what in the hell that is, except perhaps that is where Zod's other son is hiding, and the orb is using Mercer to get Zod's son out of Kandor, and onto Earth...thats my best guess.
Another issue, Lana Lang...why the hell, why the HOLY hell did they have to bring this lead anchor into another season. I will not hide the fact that I think Lana Lang has been a very unnecessary character since season 4...and I have no idea why the creators/writers/producers of the show try SO damn hard to make her relevant, because frankly...she isn't, and every time she is on screen(past season 4) I get hives...well, just kidding about the hives part, but she is very annoying.
Lana was only in Clark's life during his High School years, yet the creators of the show continue to shove her into Clark's life for an additional 4 years, and probably into Season 9 as well...I just don't get the allure of her at all. What makes it more aggravating is that she reappears right when the Lois/Clark are about ready to kiss, and kablooie, Lana's back, yippie...more annoying pining. I disliked Lana's inclusion in this season primarily because the first 8 episodes the building up of Lois/Clark was going so smoothly, and then Lana has come back, and turns Clark into an even more worthless bumbling moron. And don't mention to me what happens to Lana ultimately in the show, it was utter tripe, it was worthless, those two episodes were horribly bad.
Another issue I have with the show of late is the continuing "absence" of Superman. Clark should be moving closer to his Superman persona but instead he is almost no closer to that persona than he was in say, season 3 of Smallville. I think they tried to make that push very hard in this past season, with the Red/Blue/Blur, and him finally working at the Daily Planet, but he is going to have to don the suit very soon, and start being Superman, instead of this weak, moronic, cry baby superhero.
From a comic book standpoint, smallville is about 50/50 in continuity/relation, and sometimes the bad is almost to bad to take in, but the good I see is just so damn good, I keep trudging along, but the show is starting to be tedious to me, and unless he actually "outs" himself in the upcoming season, then the series is dead. They are bringing in characters that he never meets until he is the Superman persona, and its aggravating, it what aggravates me the most of bringing in Doomsday...as a Superman fan, I just want a Superman show, instead of this cry baby, naive superhero that Smallville has created. Smallville was good especially the first 4 seasons, because thats what I expected of his HS years, but we are 4 years removed from the HS Torch, and he is still...essentially, the same cry baby, naive, superhero....Bring on Superman, because the longer you hold off, it just kills my interest.
On a scale of 1-10, and 5 being average, I give season 8 a 7, perhaps a 6.5...if they kept Lana out of this season I definitely would rate it a solid 8. The show takes chances, and tries to bring in new characters, and by far, this show promoted a very bad ass dynamic with Lex/Lionel, and man, do I miss those guys, :D
