Stay with me here.
For a couple of months I've read developments of a new 10" touch screen device (sort of an iPod Max) being developed by Apple. Apple has made no announcements on such a device, but everybody else says it's coming. This device will be a sort of hybrid media player, e-book reader, photo editor, web surfer and basic take along computer much like the small netbooks fill now, using some sort of hybrid of their Mac OS and the iPhone OS. Not quite a full notebook computer, but not nearly as limited as a poor performing netbook. Toshiba has just announced their 6" touch screen device this weekend with Windows Mobile Pro for an OS, so this appears to be a category ready to take off.
Apple has had a very cozy relationship with Disney ever since they made a deal with Pixar, which Steve Jobs is still involved with and still on Disney's board. Disney's cartoons and films were the first ones to be available on the iTunes store, and Pixar movies arrive on it a couple of days before the DVD release.
What to put on it? Apple has been working on a project called "Cocktail" to be launched this week, being pretty much music centric. They're calling it a digital album of sorts. With interactivity, band photos, videos, liner notes, much more immersive than the standard PDF versions of album art being sold for download now. The rumor is that the Beatles catalog will finally be on iTunes in this new Cocktail format.
Amazon's Kindle is popular, but it's in black and white. Apple's device will be in color, and probably not e-paper, but that's where this new thing can shine. With the possibilities made with Cocktail, e-magazine formatting and subscriptions would be just an easy jump. Then there's digital comic books. Now they're relegated to PDF frames, but with this new flip page/touch here for more stuff (backstory?) Cocktail format and the vibrant color screen, those comics will jump off the screen and be much more immersive than ever. It's also much larger than an iPhone so comic artists can tell the story they want without the screen size problems.
Disney could be gearing Marvel up for a digital launch of X-Men, Spiderman, Hulk or whoever for this upcoming device from Apple. Of course I could be dreaming too.
