Question for fans of .... GODZILLA!!!!!!

What version of the G-suit is your favorite? For me, it would be the 2000 version.
Here's a great video of Godzilla's design evolution throughout the years: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMIKwuuW8Nk

1. I like the one on the left...
It's the version that would make me soil myself.

one Godzilla design from another.
Here are some great models that represent some of the more memorable G-suits

The 68' version was my childhood favorite. I am very partial to the 2002 GMK version as well. I love the whole "Destroyer God" idea and the white eyes.

6. That's my fave design in sculpted form, but it's not what it ended up looking like.

The head in that first pic is excellent. The head in the movie itself wasn't that cool looking (though it was still a nice design).

I like the suit used in Godzilla vs Megaguirus (though the movie itself is only so so). It was slightly refined over the 2000 version, and the skin is even more jagged and rough looking. I like all the suits used in the Millennium series.

I also like the suit design in Godzilla vs Biollante a lot. More muscular looking than before, and for once, the head puppet for close ups actually matched the full body suit.

8. Wasn't the Megagirus Godzilla
Edited on Sat Sep-12-09 05:40 PM by AllenVanAllen
extremely green too? I did dig the added roughness of that one. The Millennium design always reminded me a lot of the 62' Godzilla because it had more of a reptilian face.

The 89' Biollante Godzilla suit was a huge improvement over the 84'

The Heisei series of Godzilla movies all had a variation of this suit,

until 95' when they made his body bulkier, his head smaller and a longer neck.

9. Very green, with purple dorsal spines.

Kind of threw me at first, but it was such a neat design that the colors didn't bother me. I like how they always make some changes in design, sometimes minor, sometimes major. And not only the suit, but how they make Godzilla breathe fire. It's been a little different in each Millennium film. I like in G2000 and Megaguirus how the spines heat up and crackle for a moment before he unleashes with a snap of the head, I like how GMK made it totally devastating (the mushroom cloud was a cool touch), and I like in Tokyo SOS how it sputtered and charged like electricity going through it.

I think this shows a major part of why these movies appeal to me so much. These movies have small budgets (6 million U.S. for G2K was the highest, I believe, though GMK might have been higher), but like low budget horror movies that work, the sense of creativity, adventure and fun comes through time after time. I truly feel that the miniature effects are an art form to be respected, and these movies created a self contained world, almost like the Marvel or DC universes, where all kinds of wild ideas can come to life. Giant monsters, spaceships and aliens, death rays, cities being stomped on...it has it all. The G movies of the 60's when Toho was really in it's prime are just a blast. How can anyone watch these colorful, inventive and fun movies and not have a smile on their face? I know I can't. :)

10. A true G-fan you are my friend!

I would love to see a re-imagining of the original story Godzilla: King of the Monsters with today's FX and creativity.

12. I think Toho is reluctant to go full CGI, for a couple of reasons.
1 - They're flat out stingy, and always have been. They simply don't put a lot of money into these movies, and until they do the G movies will never make it beyond cult status. I don't mind that, but I do long to see at least one Godzilla movie done with top notch FX...and actually cast Godzilla as Godzilla. A full movie using just a CGI Godzilla would cost a lot, even for an American studio. This clip is an awesome tease of what it might look like though.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEEXydQc9KE

2 - Tradition. The guy in the suit technique, like their animation, is much more highly respected as an art form in Japan than over here. To them, this tradition in the Godzilla movies is part of the charm of them. It's one of the reasons they keep bringing back so many actors and actresses over and over, like Akira Takarada, who was in the first movie, the last movie, and a ton in between. It's both tongue in cheek in a sense, and a homage to the older G movies at the same time.

I'm torn. I'd love to see a killer CGI Godzilla, but the miniature/suit stuff is still really appealing to me as well. I do think that it's just about reached it's limit though, as CGI just allows for much more dynamic shots, and we're seeing a lot of the same shots in the new G movies that were done back in the 60's, and basically using the exact same techniques.

I think to breathe life into the series when it comes back they're going to have to take a bigger chance than they usually do. I think they make a mistake by releasing one movie every year, and they should make one every two years with twice the budget. The movie will be better and less rushed (Megaguirus has some shots that were clearly hurried, for instance), plus it would build up more excitement and demand between films. And there clearly is a demand lately. Since Final Wars there's been a spate of big monster movies. Time for the King to reclaim the throne, and I ain't talking about Elvis. :)

Here's a couple of non-related quick tidbits that are cool. Tarantino was asked right after the Kill Bill movies what movie franchise he'd most like to take over, and he said Godzilla, which triggers all kinds of wild ideas. And second, in the first Kill Bill when Uma Thurman's character is on the jet looking down at Tokyo, that's a set from one of the Godzilla movies that gets used for various city shots in other Toho films.

I need a life.

13. Pretty cool CG Zilla!

You can tell that entire scene was influenced by Spielberg's War of the Worlds. The tail smashing across the roofs is amazing!
here's a look at the "Always Godzilla" design:

It has similar features the GMK suit has. How much more of this movie has Godzilla in it? It kinda' looks like a "dream sequence" that opens the film.

I would like to see the 2014 Godzilla be a guy in a suit with CG enhancements. That seems to work pretty well. Toho should take their lead from Clovefield in how they treat camera angles and scale and allocate a bigger budget for Big G's return.
A Tarnetino Godzilla would be very interesting!

16. That's the only scene with Godzilla in it, and yes, it's a dream sequence.
I haven't seen the movie itself though, but it has nothing to do with monsters or anything.

15. I think CGI could work.
I just watched "Big Man Japan" with my wife (Sorry, honey) and I was impressed by the CGI work used in what was basically a joke on guy in suit films. Here's my favorite fight!

17. I just watched Big Man Japan last week.
What a weird movie. It reminded me of the same type of humor in The Life Aquatic of all things. Very subtle and dry comedy. It wasn't what I expected but I liked it a lot.

and greater in number.
