'New Moon' takes record $72.7M box office bite
Source: KSAW

"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" took in $72.7 million in its first day to break the single day domestic box office record previously held by "The Dark Knight," which had a $67.2 million opening day last year.

The Friday haul for the "Twilight" sequel includes a record $26.3 million from midnight screenings alone.

If "New Moon" maintains its pace, it might have a shot at the all-time best opening weekend record of $158.4 million, also held by "The Dark Knight."

"New Moon" continues the story of teen romance between a girl and a vampire (Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson), with the sequel adding a love triangle with a teen werewolf (Taylor Lautner).

21. It's a relief to know that both those actors
hate the books, hate the movies, and only took the jobs to advance their respective careers. I mean, Robert Pattinson was "HEY YOU'RE THAT GUY FROM THE HARRY POTTER MOVIE!" before this.

33. Correction: it's a SHITTY book that teaches young girls terrible lessons.
Ironic you should mention fundies, since the author -- who can't write her way out of a paper bag -- is a mormon.

the Dark Knight's overall sales. I'm sure by next week Twilight won't even make half of what it made this weekend.

20. I had to google to figure out who that was.
And I am proud to say I've never seen a single one of those movies.

Marketing to a teenage demographic is one thing, but Twilight has a very toxic message. The Edward/Bella relationship is laced with all the warning signs of an abusive relationship, but it's treated as the ultimate romance by everyone around them, thus normalizing it. I really don't think that's a good message to be promoting.

24. I Haven't Seen This New One
Edited on Sat Nov-21-09 05:18 PM by NashVegas
Saw the first one. Considering her attitude towards and the movie's general treatment of her father, is it any surprise that the lead female character has many of the same issues millions of teenage girls face, all over the US?

There's hardly a movie made in Hollywood that creates a positive image for and of women, let alone teenage girls.

The only thing that separates Twilight from anything other piece of junk out there is that it actually seems to be offering teen female movie goers something they want to see on screen. And as far as I can tell, that's the single most overwhelming thing about the movie that gets damned.

25. The novels are where the message really comes across.
http://vampirely.wordpress.com/

This is a blog where a friend of mine reviews the books. She's got a knack for making reading terrible fiction funny, so the blog is actually quite an entertaining read, but I think the inclusion of the "Edward Creep-o-meter" pretty much says it all about the novels themselves.

26. Your Friend Should
Write her own books and get paid for them. Far more satisfying than the futility of tearing down someone else's success - even if it's based on sludge.

28. Hooray! A glorified abusive relationship rakes in the dough!
Can't wait for "Eclipse", when Edward DISABLES Bella's car so she can't drive somewhere he doesn't want her to go, supposedly "for her own safety"...I'm sure that will be an even BIGGER record-breaker!

:eyeroll:

The entire series reads like Eminem and Kim went Mormon.

29. Just from the trailers it looks like crap special effects.
I tried reading the books but they're nothing like Harry Potter. The author also took a lot
of liberties with the vampire genre.

For good romantic vampire novel go back to the original Bram Stoker's Dracula. Absolute classic.
