'New Moon' sends box office soaring

"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" posted the third-largest opening in domestic box-office history, not accounting for ticket price inflation, having sold an estimated $140.7 million worth of tickets in the U.S. and Canada from Friday through Sunday. Only Warner Bros.' "The Dark Knight" and Sony's "Spider-Man 3" had bigger openings.

When "New Moon" broke the record for the biggest opening day in history on Friday, some in the industry thought fans of the first "Twilight" had simply shifted up attendance to the first day with the help of online ticketing.

and while it's nothing but "porn" for teenage girls, I did like the scenes of the Pacific Northwest!

I guess the idea of having some moody-looking guy being hot for you without necessarily wanting to get into your pants makes the teenyboppers' little hearts' race.

11. I thought it was even worse than the first one, which was no small feat.

My son, the avid Twilight fan, didn't like this one as much either. It was all the ridiculous slow-mo scenes for me. Put me to sleep. And then that kid rips his shirt off and the theater screamed. I about jumped out of my seat--thought the place was on fire! :)

12. This is a movie that the majority of teenage girls in the US will

gladly shell out their parents' money to see. My 16-year-old went Friday night with a bunch of her friends and the theatre was packed. I assume similar scenes were playing out across the US. This is one of those movies that the kids want to see opening weekend so they can all talk about it at school. I predict business will fall off by next weekend - though there will be a lot of kids on their 2nd (or more) viewing.

Driving the kids home was a hoot. Lots of "Oh my God, Jacob is so hot."

Sort of, I suppose, like seeing a Beatles movie when I was 12.........

20. I saw it yesterday, and loved it.

And I am not ashamed. I also read all of the books, thanks to my daughter. I find it funny how people actually think they're cool or have superior taste if they say they 'hate' the movies or the books. Not quite. I don't understand the kind of hatred and sneering from some people over the 'Twilight' saga. Yes, the fervor of some of the teen fans is a little weird, but teens are very intense. I'm cynical, but damn, some people are so deeply cynical and seem to hate anything that is simply good, mindless fun. Granted, the books are indeed geared to 8th graders, and I had a hard time getting into 'Twilight' since it was so obviously geared to a younger set, but I really started liking the stories during reading 'New Moon' and was hooked by 'Eclipse'. Chris Weitz did a great job of bringing the book to life. I thought the film was visually stunning (yes, I adore the Pacific NW) and loved the soundtrack, especially the Thom Yorke song that was playing as 3 scenes were simultaneously unfolding. Really good use of the music, here. The acting was good all around, especially Michael Sheen as the delightfully creepy 'Aros'.
