Happy 50th Birthday, Rocky & Bullwinkle!
Moose and Squirrel Through the Years

Wossamotta U? You didn't know that Thursday, Nov. 19, marks the 50th anniversary of all things Bullwinkle?

The dimwitted but beloved moose, along with flying squirrel pal Rocky, foes Boris and Natasha, 'Fractured Fairy Tales' and 'Mr. Peabody & Sherman,' debuted in 1959 on ABC's 'Rocky & His Friends,' a twice-a-week afternoon series that moved to primetime when it shifted to NBC and became 'The Bullwinkle Show' in 1961.

The series was created by Jay Ward, the U.C. Berkeley and Harvard grad who also created the Cap'n Crunch character. And though "moose and squir-rel," as baddies Boris and Natasha so often referred to them, are beloved today, Ward's daughter Tiffany Ward -- who was 11 when her dad created Bullwinkle and his buddies -- says the show wasn't a ratings smash during its original run.

7. Natasha's pronunication was "squettle"
Rocky: Bullwinkle, it says here that for you to inherit the fortune, you have to spend the weekend in the ancestral home Abominable Manor.
Bullwinkle: That's no problem. I've been living in an abominable manner all my life.

18. A good deal of political and social commentary was contained in those shows.
During the atomic age of Plutonium bombs and newly-synthesized heavy metal elements, it was comic relief to watch Rocky and Bullwinkle outwitting their Soviet counterparts, Boris Badinov and Natasha, to secure the aloft "Upsydasium" mountain for our country. Viewers cheered our heroes when they addressed the global crisis wrought by the collection of boxtops and when they unmasked the seemingly imposing "Mr. Big" who demonstrated the power of public scares. Great multi-level entertainment for the entire family.

35. Special thanks to William Conrad ( yes Cannon! )
William Conrad was a very versatile actor. On radio he was the original Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke. He was Cannon on TV. And it's his voice that is the Narrator of Rocky & Bullwinkle. He raised his voice a few octaves to do the narration of the Dudley Do-Right segments.

37. Moose and Squirrel !!! And all of Jay's characters rock.
I used to buy stuff from Jay and his wife at their store on Sunset back during low times for Rocky and Friends. It always knocked me out that they were there selling tee shirts to the likes of me. Such sweet people they were, on top of the funny and all.
