Michelle Duggar gives birth to baby No. 19
Michelle Duggar gives birth to baby No. 19

For the Duggar family, it's now 19 kids and counting. Michelle Duggar delivered a baby girl through an emergency C-section on Thursday evening, People.com reports. Josie Brooklyn weighed one pound, six ounces at the time of birth. Michelle, who was due in March, was airlifted to an Arkansas hospital earlier this week with gallbladder issues.

Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar star on the TLC reality show "18 Kids and Counting." The couple welcomed their first grandchild, a daughter born to the oldest Duggar kid, in October.

12. From a stand point of modern reality, yes, from a physical standpoint, no
My grandmother had 13 brothers. Her Mother lived to 91. Women are built to spit out babies.

This was very common before birth control.

29. Probably it's healthier in this day and age than it was back then for
women to have so many kids...but 19 today is just selfish...and all these kids are really, really pasty.

37. 1 pound 6 ounce birthweight = healthy?
I hope that the baby does well, but I'm sure it will face a lot of challenges that preemies are prone to.

A friend of mine had her baby very very early, and he's had lots of health problems... very heartbreaking.

From your screen name, I suspect that gender-wise, that does not concern YOU.

And, no, although it is none of your damned business, I will answer your rude accusation re: projection: I had responsible parents who had no more children than they could afford to fully support--both financially and emotionally. They did not feel the need to turn older daughters into housekeepers and surrogate Mommies to satisfy their own selfish desires for a record-breaking brood.

45. I just hope it is her choice.
The uber religious like the Duggars do not believe in birth control and that the wife should have sex with the husband anytime he wants it. Plus Im sure they dont use protection or the pull out method since that would be spilled seed. Before the she got pregnant with 19 she was trimming down she looked happy and then got pregnant and it looked as though she wasnt extatic about it. My wife really likes this show so therefore I watch it and we both agreed that Michelle didnt look thrilled about having a 19th child. My bet they will have atleast 5 more she still has about 10 years till menopause.

The older kids have the job of caring for the younger ones. It is way too many kids for her to care for by herself so the older kids..not by their choice..have the job of caring for the younger ones.

27. Yeah No Kidding
I don't understand how they do it. I mean now they just have all the older kids doing most of the work, cooking and cleaning, and taking care of each other.

I mean I have 3 kids and my wife is a stay at home mom, and it's freaking tiring. I can't imagine having a fourth, much less a fourteenth.

Also I barely feel like I have time to spend with my 3 kids and give them each any kind of individual attention. Those kids must barely see their parents in a non-group setting. You'd have children you don't really know all that well.

That makes me sad. I guess they have different priorities. To me one of my main priorities is spending one on one time each day with all 3 of my kids, both playing with them, talking about their day and what they did, etc, and then telling each one individually at bedtime that I love them. No way I could do that with 16 more kids.

Ah well.

Sadly I think unless her husband is scared into realizing that she could die and leave his to care for all those kids alone, it won't stop. I believe in their church he is the one in the marriage making those decisions for her.

31. I was with you until the swipe about choice.
I hope the baby is healthy and that her mother recovers too because there are a lot of children depending on her. I also believe that the choice to have this many children and to parade them on television is morally reprehensible, but like most pro-choice people I separate my own moral agenda from what I believe the state should allow or disallow.

Then Fundie Dad gets to start over with a newer model of slave. Something like driving the old car until the wheels fall off then getting a brand new one. It's incredibly Christian, she goes to heaven for having all those kids and he gets what a man deserves, a new woman-slave-creature-pet-thing. It's their God's plan I am sure.

64. Choice...but only when we agree with it.
It's so predictable on DU sometimes.

68. I hate incredibly self-centered, irresponsible people of all stripes.
The Duggars are just the handiest example of it at the moment. Besides, I have zero tolerance for the mindset that women are just uteruses with legs.

73. Thank you, it's not about "choice"
Their children are separated from the real world and will be so brain washed any choices in life will be nearly impossible, especially for the daughters.

If they have the choice to show off this misogynist life as something special, and if a television station can choose to air that, then I can certainly choose in this free country to say these people are misogynists and I believe that their children will suffer from this hideous upbringing.

Fundamentalists are worthless pieces of shit and add absolutely nothing positive at all to our society. If that Duggar monster wants to put his massive family on the air then I have every right to criticize them. He is a fucking patriarchal piece of dog shit. People should not whine about someone who is on a reality tv show being called out because they obviously want to be talked about in the first place.

74. So we aren't allowed to critize a "reality tv family"
These people put themselves out there for the world to watch but it is just so terrible to have an opinion about them?

I do not get that at all. If someone puts their crap out for the world to see then I cannot fathom why it is so wrong to form and express an opinion about them. Last time I checked, we still had freedom of speech in this country whether about these people or anything else.

70. Amazingly they have really been beating the odds re: childbirth and children
None of their children have signigicant health issues, all of Michelle's births seem to have gone okay. This is the worst complication so far, and at least the child has made it so far. Her only miscarriage that they have spoken about was between the birth of their first child and their twin second and third children.

I wish mother and child well, and celebrate the freedom of choice we have in this counrty.

82. I had a premmie (31 weeks and 1.6 # ) and their child will be in
the hospital for at least a month. Even with insurance coverage it was expensive. I guess they must have insurance through the show.

83. I can't help wondering if they have health insurance that will cover
This baby will probably easily be a million dollars in hospital bills plus mom's preclamsia & hospitalization. Will TLC be covering the cost? They have the right to have as many kids as they want - but IMHO they are really playing the odds of losing Mom and/or the baby. Maybe God is telling them with this near call enough already.

They have basic insurance, not catastrophic coverage. They were on Larry King and Jim Bob stated that they paid only $475 a month for the entire family and that the insurance does not cover childbirth.

Quote:
How about health insurance? How does a family of 20 afford health insurance? Check out this transcript from the April 13, 2009 Larry King Interview. (Behar stepped in for King who was out sick)

BEHAR: Of course. According to the latest issue of “People Magazine,” you guys only pay — the Duggar family, the 18 kids, you only pay 417 dollars a month for health insurance. How do I get on that plan? Because that’s a lot of people on that health insurance for 475. That’s pretty good.

JB. DUGGAR: Well, it is, but actually, we have, like, a 2,500 deductible, and then also it doesn’t cover maternity. There’s several different things it doesn’t cover.

J. DUGGAR: And I’m not on the plan anymore, so yes.

BEHAR: Does it include dental? You need dental also, right? All those kids.

JB. DUGGAR: Dental, it covers about half of the dental costs.

BEHAR: I’m sure there are braces and everything else, right? Do you think it will be –

JB. DUGGAR: That’s been out of pocket.

84. My bill was $225,000 and that was 12 years ago. We had
to cover 10% and we're still paying it off.
