1. Spirograph and a black light.
Weird I know. Army men and fire trucks never did anything for me, I don't know why though.

4. followed not long after by Super Spirograph:

Super Spirograph allowed you to form your own shapes to use for even more complex designs. There was even a Motorized Spirograph which drew the design for you, you just chose which wheels to use. Sadly though I never got the Motorized Spirograph.

Now there are online spirographs which you can go to and just select the wheel sizes and pen colors.

12. We had paint-by-numbers and the Jon Gnagy "Learn to Draw" set.

Though I'm not an artist now I believe I learned basic drawing skills from it. I spent hours during school sketching geometric shapes and then shading them.

11. Ooooh, I never got those two. The original was enough to
keep me mesmerized for hours with the beautiful patterns I could create.

Of course, now I'm going to have to try the online versions. :)

2. Robot Commando

I got this when I was 12 (1965). It's head would open up and a rocket would fire; its arms would throw little plastic balls and it could go forward, backward, left or right.

A couple of tidbits though about how it really operated:

Never mind seeing a TV ad that showed a boy talking into the "microphone" to give the robot instructions. That was done with the little dial on the "microphone's" handle. However, I thought voice commands were very real (until I tried it for the first time)! So much for truth in advertising.

Also, you had to play with it on linoleum or other hard-surface floorings. If you tried to make it go on wall-to-wall carpet, forget it! It would crawl to a stop! I played with it mostly on the kitchen floor.
