This is a review of three of the All Night Long movies as they appear in the Human Beings are Garbage collection. There are six movies in the All Night Long series, but the U.S. collection I own only contains the first three moives, All Night Long, Atrocity, and Final Chapter (aka Final Atrocity).
Country of origin: Japan
Year 1992, 1995, and 1996
Genre: Drama
Story: All Night Long Three teenage boys bond after witnessing a girl's murder. The three decide to have a party to forget about the horrific event and are expected to bring a girl as a date. This expectation pains each of the three boys in a different way. The three boys are then bonded by a second act of violence which sends them on a quest for revenge.
Atrocity A nerd is jumped by a street gang. They beat him, strip him, humiliate him, and then burn him on the hand and genitals. The gang leader becomes fascinated with the nerdy teen and tries to seduce him into a world of brutal violence.
Final Chapter A boy becomes obsessed with a girl and collects her garbage in order to study her. He tries to figure out her menstrual cycles, he sucks on her old toothbrushes, collects hairs and guesses which part of the body they came from, etc. The situation escalates and becomes more desperate as his obsession grows. The movie explores the objectification of others through extremes and themes of alienation.
Acting: Average
Humor: No intentional humor
Violence: All Night Long has some strong violence, but not a lot,
Atrocity is extremely brutal and sadistic, and
Final Chapter is pretty violent. Although these movies are not horror, the second two should be avoided by those who don't watch certain horror movies because of the violence. If you can handle Texas Chainsaw Massacre, you can handle these movies.
Sex: All three of these movies contain sexual violence.
Overall: I like the idea and concept of
All Night Long, but the actual movie was a bit on the boring side for me.
Atrocity has very little story, but has many scenes of fucked up violence and a hero who struggles to retain his humanity and sanity.
Atrocity is definitely an enjoyable movie.
Final Chapter is my favorite of the three. Quirky story, weird characters, nonexistent morals, and brutal violence combine to make a delightful movie.
Side Note: I have read some All Night Long collections have the movies in the wrong order with the wrong titles. The Media Blasters/Tokyo Shock version is correct.
