Live Action Movie Review: Thirst
Country of origin: Korea

Year: 2009

Genre: Vampire

Story: A Catholic priest volunteers for a medical experiment which almost kills him. He receives a blood transfusion, but the blood donor was a vampire! The priest struggles with his faith, humanity, stronger sexual urges, and his new blood thirst.

Acting: Excellent.

Humor: Definitely some funny scenes.

Violence: Normal vampire movie violence.

Sex: Contains nudity and some sex sex scenes.

Overall: Another great movie by Park Chan-wook, creator of Oldboy. Thirst gets a little weird in the middle of the movie, which may bother some viewers and entertain others, but the story returns to "normal" again. Not my favorite Park Chan-wook movie, but still really good.

Sang-hyun tries hard to be a good Catholic priest.

Sang-hyun finds non-violent ways to get blood when volunteering at a hospital.

2. Oldboy is awesome, the other two in the series good as well.
I especially liked Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.

3. My second favorite movie of last year.
I totally loved this flick, and I loved that they didn't rely on any typical vampire movie cliches.

5. I don't know who recommended this last year
but I passed it along to a few people who love Korean cinema and they loved the referral.

Thanks for the reminder

6. Mister Lonely, by Harmony Korine.
Edited on Sun Jan-10-10 11:48 AM by Forkboy
No horror, no action, just an honest to goodness drama that I actually enjoyed. It's about a french Michael Jackson impersonator who meets a Marilyn Monroe impersonator. She tells him that she lives on an island with a bunch of other celebrity impersonators (including Abe Lincoln with Tourette's), and she invites him to join them. That's all the movie is about. A lot of people will find it boring, but I was engrossed by the actors (and trust me, there's a scene that will make you never see Larry from the Three Stooges the same way again).

It's totally different from Korine's other work (Gummo, Kids, Julien Donkey Boy) and easily his most mature and well made movie yet. Very off beat, and a real special film, imo. Technically it was released in 2007, but I just saw it this year and found it to be as good as any others I saw, so I'm counting it. :)

Inglourious Basterds would be third on my list.
