Cameras ‘Catch’ Captain Phil’s Final Days

Feb 17th, 2010 | 5:20 PMDetails are beginning to emerge about the final days of the ‘Deadliest Catch‘ Capt. Phil Harris’ life, including his last fighting moments, touching words to his family and friends, and how the Discovery Channel’s camera crew got it all on film.
“We had nine days total that we were there to enjoy a few moments with him,” 26 year old son Josh told People. “We had our closest people there and it was awesome.”
The captain made famous by the reality show that chronicles the voyages of Cornelia Marie and the commercial fishing industry, lost his life February 9 as the result of complications from a stroke he suffered on January 29. At the age of 53, Phil leaves behind a wife and two sons, also involved in the harsh fishing business in Alaska.
During filming in January just before the stroke, it seemed like Phil’s physically taxing career and heavy smoking habit were taking a toll on his health. “He seemed like he’d just gotten tireder and tireder,” said Todd Stanley, a producer for ‘Deadliest Catch.’
Captain Phil Harris: One to RememberCameras were rolling up to the final days of Capt. Phil’s life. After he awoke from a medically-induced coma only a few days after a lengthy surgery – an event which astonished doctors and only reaffirmed Harris’ fighting spirit – executive producer Thom Beers told EW, “When he came out
, he was trying to talk. He couldn’t, but he was motioning with his hand to my producer and camera man.” Beers continued, “We said we want to give you your space and get out, and he wrote on a piece of paper. It said, ‘No, we need a great finish to this story.’”
To the end, Harris was still the gruff leader seen routinely on TV and even told the doctors and nurses during his care, “Don’t f**k up.”
